Flu Q & A

What is the flu?

The flu, or influenza, refers to a viral respiratory illness that starts in the lower respiratory tract and makes its way to the upper tract. If left untreated, the flu can develop into something much more dangerous, and spread to those around you.

Are there different types of flu?

There are five different types of flu, and each one has its own side effects and spreads differently:

  • Influenza A: mammals and birds
  • Influenza B: mammals and seals
  • Influenza C:  rare and epidemic
  • Avian flu: birds to humans in Asia, Africa, and Europe
  • Swine flu: pigs to humans in the United States

Dr. Landfield can tell you which types of flu you’re more at risk of developing during a consultation.

What are the common symptoms of the flu?

In its early stages, the flu exhibits symptoms similar to a common cold — this is one reason why some people don’t seek treatment. During your appointment at First Med Marin, Dr. Landfield uses his expert knowledge to differentiate between the two and suggest appropriate treatment.

The main difference to keep in mind between a common cold and the flu is that symptoms of the flu arise with little to no warning, while those of a common cold develop over time.

The most common symptoms of the flu include:

  • Congestion
  • Fever (100.4°F and above)
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Sharp headaches
  • Sudden chills and cold sweats
  • Persistent dry cough
  • Sore throat

If you think you’ve exhibited any of these symptoms, book an appointment at First Med Marin immediately to avoid spreading the illness to others.

How is the flu treated?

Treating the flu starts with preventive care. Dr. Landfield offers year-round flu shots to protect you from the virus. He recommends that you get a flu shot every year to avoid infection.

If you’re exhibiting symptoms of the flu and haven’t gotten a flu shot, Dr. Landfield might recommend antiviral medication such as Relenza® or Tamiflu®, as well as painkillers to help with any muscle-related symptoms.

While you wait for the medication to kick in, you should stay indoors and avoid contact with people. You should also drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and rest as much as you can.
