Studies estimate more than 38 million Americans suffer from migraine headaches. Migraines are a type of severe headache that often causes intense head pain, sensitivity to light and sound, nausea, and more.

Migraines are common, but uncovering the cause and finding an effective treatment isn’t always easy. Headache pain can last anywhere from 4-72 hours. Untreated chronic migraines can significantly affect your quality of life, forcing you to miss out on work, school, and other activities.

Many people don’t seek treatment for migraines and often suffer in silence, but treatment is available. At First Med Marin, Barry Landfield, MD offers personalized care and the latest in migraine treatment, including BOTOX® for migraines.

BOTOX is an FDA-approved treatment for chronic migraines that’s growing in popularity because it can reduce the number of headache days you experience by up to 50%. Find out if BOTOX is right for your migraine pain and make your first appointment at First Med Marin by calling our office or booking online.

BOTOX can stop headache pain before it starts

BOTOX uses on botulinum toxin A, a neurotoxin that has the power to temporarily reduce muscle contractions. When it’s used for cosmetic purposes, BOTOX relaxes muscles in the face to smooth wrinkles. When it’s used to treat chronic migraines, it blocks pain signals to the brain to stop migraine pain before it even starts.

BOTOX for migraine is injected directly into muscles and nerves around your head and neck. It helps stop headache pain by blocking the release of chemicals that transmit pain signals to the brain. If your brain doesn’t receive pain signals, the pain networks aren’t activated and you don’t suffer a migraine.

BOTOX treatment sessions for migraines take just 15 minutes

BOTOX for migraine involves a series of injections into seven key muscle groups around your head and neck. These muscles are directly related to pain sensations in migraine headaches, and BOTOX effectively blocks pain signals when it’s injected properly.

We inject the BOTOX solution into 31 specific locations in your head and neck, and treatment takes about 15 minutes from start to finish. The needles Dr. Landfield and our team use for BOTOX injections are very small, and many patients report a small pinprick.

When you start BOTOX treatment, Dr. Landfield generally recommends two sessions spaced 12 weeks apart to determine if BOTOX is effective for your headache pain. You might begin noticing fewer headaches as early as four weeks after your first treatment.

BOTOX could be right for you

BOTOX is FDA-approved to treat chronic migraines in patients 18 and older. Chronic migraines are often diagnosed in patients who experience 15 or more headache days every month. BOTOX isn’t recommended for people who get fewer than 14 headaches a month.

For many people with chronic migraines, BOTOX provides effective relief when other migraine treatments have failed. Regular treatment with BOTOX can prevent 8-9 headaches a month.

Dr. Landfield helps you decide if BOTOX is right for managing your migraine pain. One treatment with BOTOX for migraine can prevent headaches for up to three months, so you can expect to continue coming in for treatment about every 12 weeks.

If you’re one of the millions of Americans suffering from migraines and you haven’t found a treatment that works for you, it’s time to learn about BOTOX for migraine. Call our office for a consultation today.
